Nancy Robinson

The Rev. Nancy Robinson is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries serving as continuing education coordinator for the Sierra Leone Annual Conference in West Africa. She is based in Freetown, and was commissioned in June 2013.

Nancy’s work focuses on leadership development for both clergy and laity in the areas of worship, including music; sacramental theology and practice; and stewardship. She works closely with the conference staff and with her husband, Clifford (Kip) Robinson, also a missionary, who is coordinator of congregational development for the conference.

The roots of United Methodist mission in Sierra Leone go back to 1855, and the current annual conference was formed in 1984. The church operates a network of elementary and secondary schools, four hospitals, and several other health facilities. It anticipates establishing a school of theology in the near future.

Nancy Robinson is an ordained deacon in the Virginia Annual Conference. She is the daughter of Methodist missionaries and was born and lived in Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia) until age 15, when political tensions resulted in the family’s deportation. She completed high school in New Jersey and then attended then Otterbein College, Westerville, Ohio, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She married and raised five children as the wife of an army officer.

A Volunteer-In-Mission trip back to Zimbabwe reawakened a desire in Nancy to engage in Christian service. She enrolled in seminary, receiving a Master of Arts degree in theology and Christian education in 2002 from Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC. She also earned a Master of Science degree in patient counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, and served two years as a chaplain.

“My call to mission came to me as a very young child,” Nancy says. “Early years lived in Africa instilled in me a love for community and a keen awareness of the challenges and joys of living cross culturally….As an educator, my passion is to facilitate learning, to invite questions that open doors to greater awareness and understanding of the life God has given us and how we are created to live together in wholeness and community.”

She has served on VIM teams in many places, including Kenya, South Africa, Sudan, Brazil, and the United States.

Nancy was minister of discipleship at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church, Williamsburg, Virginia, from 2004 to 2007, and held a similar position at the North Decatur United Methodist Church, Decatur, Georgia from 2007 to 2009, a ministry through which she reached out to the immigrant community. For the next three years, she was president of the Friends of Barnabas Foundation, a healthcare ministry in Honduras.

Nancy is married to Clifford (Kip) M. Robinson, Jr., and between them they have seven adult children. Her missionary parents were Hunter and Ella Griffin.
