Brazil: Partnerships

The Shade and Fresh Water Project

The Shade and Fresh Water Project is a national network to help local Methodist churches develop supervised activities to keep children off the streets, as children go to school for only four hours a day. Since most parents work two jobs, the majority of children are unsupervised for large portions of the day. Local churches help organize Shade and Fresh Water Centers in their communities to offer after-school programs for children between 6 and 14 years of age.

You can enter into relationship with the children of the Shade and Fresh Water Centers and get to know them. At a Shade and Fresh Water Center, your team might renovate the facilities and run activities and lessons for the children.

According to General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) missionary Teca Greathouse, “There are more than 3,000 children being cared for every day because of this connection with the Virginia Conference.”

John Wesley Medical Boat

The John Wesley Medical Boat serves communities along the Madeira River in the Amazon River Basin. These communities are isolated from larger cities and their resources (including socialized medicine).

In these communities, visits and contacts with doctors, dentists and social services are nearly nonexistent because of transportation difficulties. A dire lack of preventative medicine and government care facilitates easy spread of poisonous tropical illnesses, yellow fever, dengue, leischmaniose, gynecological illnesses and orthodontic problems.

Teams of medical professionals and other volunteers on the Medical Boat provide treatment as well as training on how to improve the conditions of daily life.
