Mission Seminars
The church experiences God's mission as it pours itself out for others, crossing all boundaries to identify with the struggles and needs, the yearnings and sorrows, the joys and fears, the confusion and doubt, and the quest for true human dignity among all people everywhere, especially those regarded as the least of God's children.

The United Methodist Seminar Program: Connecting Faith, Justice, & Charity

Mission with new eyes and tools…Youth groups are invited to the UM Building on Capitol Hill where they can actively participate in the UM Seminar Program, an experiential opportunity integrating faith, justice, charity, and citizenship sponsored by the General Board of Church and Society (GBCS). The Seminar Program offers groups of United Methodists unique ways to explore and learn about issues of concern to them. Youth groups choose the topic they want to focus on, like Homelessness and Hunger, Environmental Justice, World Peace, Violence, or others. Advocates, policy-makers, community educators and artists engage participants through creative and interactive experiences in the UM building and in local neighborhoods of DC, encouraging participants to connect justice and charity and faith. The minimum group size is 20 (exceptions are possible). The cost per day for the seminar is $12 for each participant. The seminar staff can provide a wide range of suggestions for lodging, meals, and recreation.  For more information you can also watch a video about the Seminar Program on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9o8aPNAr28.

Youth Theological Initiative, Candler School of Theology

A four-week Summer Academy is the centerpiece of the Youth Theological Initiative at Candler School of Theology, here rising high school seniors from across the country come together to explore the relationship of theology to contemporary society and imagine new possibilities for the public good. Each summer during the month of July, 48 rising seniors receive a full-scholarship to spend four weeks on Emory University Campus worshiping, exploring, sharing and learning with other youth. Applications are due near the beginning of March with a $75 application fee if yours is accepted. If accepted, the subsidized cost you will pay is $500; however, there are some scholarships available.
