Virginia United Methodists to welcome Bishop Sharma Lewis on Sept. 17th

Hundreds of United Methodists will gather at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Reveille United Methodist Church, 4200 Cary Street Road, Richmond, to celebrate the assignment of Bishop Sharma D. Lewis to lead the Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church for the next four years.
The traditional service will be filled with music, liturgy and pageantry to welcome Lewis, the first African-American bishop to serve as religious leader of the 1,169 local churches and 327,647 United Methodists in the Virginia Conference.
The service will begin with a colorful procession of nearly 200 participants, including clergy wearing robes and red stoles, educational institution presidents wearing academic regalia, participants carrying symbols of the office of bishop and acolytes carrying candles and banners.

Music will be provided by choirs from Reveille, Wesley Memorial and Trinity United Methodist Churches and a harpist. The congregation will sing many of Bishop Lewis’ favorite hymns.
Retired Bishop H. Hasbrouck Hughes, Jr. of Williamsburg and retired Bishop Ray W. Chamberlain Jr. of Winchester will lead the covenant service. Bishop Young Jin Cho, outgoing bishop of the Virginia Conference, will also participate.
Leaders from the Virginia Conference will present Bishop Lewis with symbols of episcopal ministry, including a shepherd’s staff made especially for her by a member of Reveille UMC.
A reception honoring Bishop Lewis and her family will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service.
Children are welcome to attend the service, but no child care will be provided.
Parking will be available onsite at Reveille UMC. Overflow parking will be available in the parking lot of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral at the intersection of Antrim Ave. and Kingcrest Parkway. Police/traffic control will be present upon arrival and departure on Cary Street.
