A team of seven clergy and laity from the Virginia Conference departed on bicycles from Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church, Charlottesville, June 11. Their destination, over 230 miles later, was the 2004 Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, gathering in Hampton, June 13-16.
Known as the "Holy Rollers" (because they like to roll for the holy purpose) the group's purpose is to inspire congregations to give generousely to the 2004 Annual Conference Offering. The cyclists accpeted pledges from their local United Methodist congregations.
The group arrived at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Ashland Friday night, where they were served dinner, and then spent the night at Randolph-Macon College, before continuing on to Hampton the next day.
Team members Edward Hopkins, Fred Schneider, Jillian "Jill" Patterson, Valerie Ritter, Rizzy von Trapp Walker, Matt Albright, and Bob Blinn arrived in Hampton Saturday along with pledges totaling around $10,000.
