Essential medicines and medical supplies for clinics and hospitals in countries that have experienced sudden natural disasters.
Description
The Medicine Boxes contain 18 essential drugs and medical supplies to respond to common illnesses. Each box can serve a population of 1,000 adults and children for a period of three months. Medicine Boxes supply clinics, hospitals, disaster response efforts, and primary health care initiatives with basic medicine or medical supplies. These basic supplies often mean the difference between life and death for communities with limited access to medical facilities. Initiated by Interchurch Medical Assistance, Inc., this program will create a Medicine Box containing 18 essential drugs and medical supplies in sufficient quantity to respond to common illnesses. The Medicine Box can serve a population of 1000 adults and children for a period of three months. This program was developed in response to recommendations of the World Health Organization.
The Medicine Box will be shipped by UMCOR or hand-carried by volunteer medical teams to programs approved by the Health & Welfare Ministries program of the United Methodist Church. These programs include primary health care clinics, hospitals and/or disaster response efforts. Funds will help to cover the shipping costs.
