Supporting the Vision of Native American Ministries
Summary
Pastors' salaries, church programs and community projects of Native American churches.
Description
BACKGROUND:
The office of Native American and Indigenous Ministries, works with over 200 Native American United Methodist ministries in the United States. Work is also done with many of the 500 federally recognized tribes in this country, as well as, with the villages of Alaska and the islands of Hawaii.
HISTORY:
In the past quadrennium, we raised $2,663.98 through the Advance. With these funds and funds received from other General Board of Global Ministries resources, church agencies, conference, districts, local congregations, non-profit organizations, and foundations, we have been able to assist 15 churches moving toward self-sufficiency.
MISSION:
It is important for a plan to be supported by many means. Through the Advance, we have enabled rural/reservation-local churches to develop their plan for self-sufficiency. We have helped them with a variety of resources to build their budgets for long-term ventures.
EXPECTATIONS:
Many Native people don't believe they can write a plan, much less follow through on one. However, there are many Native people that have the skills and talents, but never utilized them. In this time of planning, people see their dreams come true, especially those who have been involved from the beginning, and can see the fruits of their labor.
