A missionary with the General Board of Global Ministry of the UnitedMethodistChurch, Lyn Gray is serving as Training and Development Officer with the YMCA of Liberia in Monrovia, Liberia.
Having worked with young people all of her life, Lyn is now working with youth of all religions and ethnic groups at the YMCA in Monrovia. Her work takes her to the twelve YMCA branches around the country to work with young women and men dedicated to serving their communities and country.
After more than 30 years of experience in international education, training, and management, Lyn has returned to Liberia where she served in the 1970s in the Peace Corps and taught high school English and French.
After her time in the Peace Corps, Lyn worked with GeorgetownUniversity to direct international student programs and student internships in refugee assistance. Returning to the Peace Corps as staff in the 1980’s, Lyn served in the Congo and Niger. She has directed international programs at Virginia Tech and led the National Peace Corps Association.
Mrs. Gray grew up in Virginia and has a bachelor’s degree from MaryWashingtonCollege and her masters from GeorgetownUniversity. Lyn and husband Jim, also a GBGM missionary, are the parents of one son, Rafael, who now lives in North Carolina after spending much of his life in Africa.
When she saw the end of the civil war in Liberia in 2003, Lyn knew where she needed to be. “The feeling was so strong and clear that I knew it was my calling to stay in Liberia. There is so much work to be done helping people come out of their trauma and rebuild their lives.”
