The Rev. George Neas joined the conference staff as Director of Stewardship on July 1, 2007.

This new, part-time stewardship position is funded jointly by the Virginia Conference, the Virginia Conference Credit Union, and the Virginia Conference Foundation. “Stewardship has been a major focus of George’s ministry throughout his career,” said Susan Garrett, director of Connectional Ministries. “He brings a real passion for stewardship education, and looks forward to resourcing the churches of the Virginia Conference in very practical ways.”

The director of stewardship will help the conference resource local churches to have more effective stewardship efforts.

Before his call to ministry, Neas spent more than 10 years in schools in the Tidewater area, working as a teacher and guidance counselor. He also served in the United States Navy from 1968-74. Neas is also a certified emergency medical technician.

A Virginia native, he joined the conference in 1980 and was ordained an elder in 1985. Prior to his current appointment at St. George’s, Neas has served at the North Frederick Charge, as an associate at Virginia Beach UMC, Tappahannock Memorial UMC, St. Paul’s UMC, Park Place UMC, Crooks Memorial UMC, Chestnut Hill UMC, Danville Cooperative Parish UMC and Sandbridge Community Chapel UMC.

Neas has also been very active on the district level, serving as missions secretary in the Lynchburg District, president of the Rappahannock District ministers’ group, chaplain for the Peninsula District and education coordinator for the Norfolk District.

He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., and a Master of Education from Old Dominion University (ODU). His undergraduate degree is also from ODU.

Neas and his wife Libba, a middle school science teacher with Fairfax County schools, have four grown children and two grandchildren.
