Marshall Bailey and Anne West of the youth delegation (sitting on spuds) bag potatoes with Dawn-Marie Singleton and Angie Williams.
Approximately 150 volunteers gathered in the parking lot to bag 40,360 lbs of sweet potatoes at the Virginia Annual Conference on Tuesday morning. Led by the youth contingent to the conference, many helping hands converted piles of sweet potatoes into 10-pound bags for distribution throughout the Tidewater area.
Judy Bair and Marian Kelley represented the Society of St. Andrew who obtained the potatoes from a packer in North Carolina and arranged the transportation to Hampton for the traditional work in mission by volunteers attending the Annual Conference. Ms. Kelley reported that this was one of almost 100 distributions of potatoes by the Society of St. Andrew since January of this year. Once the potatoes are bagged, they are given to charitable organizations in the local area for further distribution to needy families.
Judy Bair reported that potatoes were being given to the Peninsula Food Bank, South Eastern Virginia Food Bank in Norfolk, and almost a dozen local churches in the Chesapeake, Newport News, Norfolk, and Hampton communities.
