The Virginia Conference Communications staff is now in the process of developing an expanded, interactive version of the
Virginia United Methodist Advocatethat will be a featured part of a redesign of the Virginia Conference Web site. Targeted for completion this fall, the new online Advocate will be available on this Web site, but its format and components will be completely different.
While some Advocate articles will be available to all Web site visitors, full content of the magazine – plus additional material not included in the print edition and access to archived issues – will be password protected and available only to subscribers.
Beginning this fall, Advocate subscribers will be able to choose from three options: 1) to receive the printed magazine, 2) to access content via the Internet, or 3) to receive the magazine in both formats. Advertisers will also be given options to advertise in the print publication, the online publication, or both. More details and prices will be announced later this summer.
As part of this transition, the free pdf version of the Advocate will no longer be posted on this Web site.
“The Print Media subcommittee of the Virginia Conference Board of Communications is taking these steps to transform the Advocate into a true multimedia hub of information for United Methodists in Virginia, and to ensure the ongoing financial health of the 176-year-old print publication,” said Neill Caldwell, Advocate editor. “With the increasing use of the Internet, many are getting their information online rather than from a print magazine, and the committee wants to make sure that those people are also fully aware of what is happening in the conference and throughout The United Methodist Church connection.”
To assist those who may be inconvenienced during the few months when the news magazine will not be available online, Caldwell said the Advocate is now offering new subscribers to the print publication a special $2 discount off the annual subscription price.
Those wishing to subscribe to the Advocate can contact Peggy Cribbs in the conference Communications office at 1-800-768-6040, ext. 110, or (804) 521-1110, or by e-mail to advocate@vaumc.org. Single copies of the Advocate are also available for purchase at $2 each from the conference Communications office.
