Project Transformation

Project Transformation... ...is an 8-week Monday-Thursday day camp for children in first through fifth grades, hosted by churches in Charlottesville and Waynesboro, and operated by college interns. Interns provide a full slate of activities, beginning each morning with a time of singing, followed by Bible lessons and worship, an hour of reading with volunteer tutors, crafts, recreation, and a time of afternoon enrichment when church and community volunteers introduce children to their passions and professions.

Part vacation Bible school and part academic enrichment, Project Transformation focuses on reading skills and community involvement, giving children from some of the area’s most vulnerable neighborhoods exposure to a variety of experiences and people within a Christian context.

Transforming Communities

Project Transformation is designed

• to provide children in low-income neighborhoods with a safe, stimulating summer camp experience with a focus on reading and exposure to interested and caring adults

• to challenge college students in a hands-on ministry to make connections between faith and action, vocation and career, and to help them envision and consider full-time ministry in the future

• to give churches a way to reach out to the communities surrounding them, building relationships that can continue to be developed beyond the summer.

What’s In Store For Interns

• 12 interns living and serving together in central Virginia

• Training and team-building adventures

• Vocational reflection and career exploration field trips

• $2000 living stipend (room and board are provided)

• Share and live out your faith with children and their families

• Experience partnerships with rural, urban, and suburban church communities

• Live with and learn from Christians of different faith backgrounds

Interns from across the country live communally and engage in regular times of reflection on their experiences, including weekly Bible studies, meetings with host church pastors, and interaction with a summer chaplain and Wesley Foundation staff. Fridays are devoted to vocational exploration and spiritual development for the interns, as they visit different ministry settings and meet with people who are combining faith and work in their vocations. Project Transformation is an ecumenical ministry and we welcome interns from various Christian denominations.
